— and we're right next door

Borough Market has fed Londoners for over a thousand years.
Arthur Hooper's has been here to quench their thirst. If you're visiting the market
and looking for somewhere to eat, drink and take the weight off your feet, you've just found it.

One of the world's great food markets, right on your doorstep.

Borough Market is one of London's most iconic destinations, a sprawling, covered food market tucked beneath the Victorian railway arches of Southwark, moments from London Bridge. It draws over 4.5 million visitors a year from across the globe, and it's not hard to see why.

With more than 100 stalls spread across 4.5 acres, the market offers everything from artisan cheeses, fresh meat and seafood to international street food, freshly baked bread, speciality coffee and handmade chocolates. Whether you're a serious foodie, a curious tourist or simply hungry, Borough Market rewards every visit with something unexpected and delicious.

The market's covered walkways and railway arches create a genuinely atmospheric experience, a maze of sensory delight where the smell of grilled cheese mingles with fresh bread, spices and the buzz of thousands of happy visitors. It's as much about the experience as it is the food.

After a morning exploring the market, sampling everything from raclette to Ethiopian spice blends to hand-rolled pasta, you'll want somewhere proper to sit down, recharge and enjoy a well-earned drink.

That's where Arthur Hooper's comes in. We're right next to the heart of it all, just steps from the market's most celebrated stalls. A genuine, welcoming London bar and restaurant where the food is honest, the drinks are excellent and you're always made to feel at home.

Borough Market — a brief history

~1014 - Borough Market is believed to have been trading near London Bridge since at least 1014, its position on the only southern route into the city making it a natural trading hub.

1276 - The earliest known written record of the market dates from 1276, documenting it as a key source of produce for Londoners on the south bank of the Thames.

1756 - Following a parliamentary order to cease trading on Borough High Street, local residents raised £6,000 to purchase a new site — the triangular plot the market still occupies today.

1800s - Industrialisation transformed the market into a major wholesale fruit and vegetable supplier to the city. By 1862 it even had its own dedicated railway line.

1990s - A wave of interest in artisan, organic and specialty foods breathed new life into the market. Independent producers moved in, events launched, and Borough Market's modern identity was born.

Today - Borough Market welcomes over 4.5 million visitors a year — locals doing their weekly shop alongside food lovers from around the world. It's one of London's most cherished institutions
